    Features

Supertunia petunias are vigorous with slightly mounded habits that function as both fillers and spillers in containers.  They are also excellent landscape plants, best suited to be placed near the front of beds.  They have medium to large sized flowers.

Supertunia® Saffron Finch, a new sunny yellow Supertunia with a full, well-branched, rounded habit. Its flowers are a more intense yellow than Supertunia Limoncello, but they may transition to creamy yellow in southern climates. Try pairing Supertunia Saffron Finch with bold purples, reds and magentas for an especially eye-catching look. Its mounded trailing habit helps it mix beautifully with other medium to high vigor varieties in hanging baskets, upright containers and window boxes, and it can also be used as a flowering groundcover. Like all Supertunias, you can expect this colorful new petunia to bloom prolifically all season without deadheading.

    Maintenance Notes:

These are heat tolerant plants, that aren't particularly fussy and need little routine maintenance. They will perform best if an application of controlled release fertilizer is included at the time of planting. This applies to both landscape and container plantings. Supertunias are heavy feeders, but a single dose is usually sufficient for landscape beds in most climates. If you have a very long season, a second application of controlled release plant food should be considered for landscape plantings. In general, containers need to be fed more than landscape plants. Supertunias in containers will need to be fed more regularly to be their absolute best. A second application of a controlled release fertilizer can be applied about every two months to container plants, which will help. However, for the very best performance I find regularly applying water soluble fertilizer starting about two months after the containers are planted gives the best results.  These extra applications of plant food really makes a difference in performance through the summer.

If your plant begins to look open or a bit tired, an allover trim can be beneficial.  Use a sharp pair of scissors or pruning shears to trim back up to 1/3 of the volume of the plant. I pair any trim with a dose of water soluble fertilizer to provide instant energy to help kickstart new growth, branching and flowering. Your plant will take a week to recover from the trim, but the end result is a fuller plant with more blooms going forward. You may repeat the trim as needed through the season.

    • I bought 4 of these from a local nursery and half have died. I had three on a scheduled drip water hose and one in a pot. Two in the ground didn’t make it. The first one that died only lived a few weeks. (Planted April 30th) The second one I noticed a decline in early July and removed it. I exclusively use proven winners petunias for years so I’m not an amateur. This new line of petunia needs more work and I wouldn’t purchase again until they come out with an IMPROVED version. The remaining plants have not grown like crazy like all my others, but have remained somewhat small. The color is beautiful, I hope they can work out the kinks.

    • Ordered this plant via Proven Winners in the fall for Spring planting. Received, planted, watered and fertilized. Unfortunately, after flowering the Deer ate all 7 plants, even pulling them out of the ground. I called Proven Winners, and relayed my story thinking they would replace those plants as they were advertised as Deer Resistant. No such luck, they quickly told me that DR was not a guarantee and made no attempt to replace my plants. This was my third year of ordering online from them, I like PW, mainly from watching Garden Answer. I thought they would back their advertisement up, sorely not. I won’t be ordering anything else from them, or purchasing their product from the big box stores either.

    • This yellow is the best PW YELLOW yet. Reminds me of the yellow in lemon slice, but more intense. Utterly cheerful and dazzling. Great growth pattern for the pots they’re in, very long lasting blooms, have tolerated MI crazy springtime temperatures and generally just make me SMILE.
